A New Year and New Ideas

Okay, it's true, I did somehow manage to fall off the blog for a couple of months. I missed you all so much at December's round table and look forward to comparing notes as we plunge (in my case, head first) into the new year. I've just compiled some ideas for using resourcefulness (February's core value) and will have that posted as soon as I've tweaked a few things. In the meantime, this is your reminder that we will be having roundtable on Thursday, January 13th, at the Cresthaven building once more. (The LDS church near the water tower on the Rexburg hill.) The start time is 7:30, but slip in a few minutes early and you'll be able to sign up for door prizes while you grab a handful of helpful handouts.

As I mentioned in my last entry, one of the most valuable things I've learned in my short time in scouting is to use your resources. For our Blue and Gold Banquet last year, we held a "birthday party" to celebrate the 100th year of scouting. Among other things, we wrapped boxes in colorful tissue paper, tied off with curly ribbons (i.e. "presents") to scatter along the tables as decorations. When I told the leaders I needed all their boxes to make this work, they each brought just a few shoe boxes, claiming that's all they had. Knowing we had enough banquet tables out to feed something like 250 people, I realized it would never be enough. So I got resourceful. I started rummaging through my storage room. I brought empty cereal boxes, cracker boxes, pop tart boxes, granola bar boxes, and even cylindrical things like empty toilet paper rolls. With the tissue paper on them, they all qualified as "presents," and added to the variety of shapes and sizes on the tables. Other leaders caught the vision, and soon we had everything from tissue boxes to pizza boxes. It was great! Resourcefulness comes in many shapes and sizes, too. You may have a great idea for how to do something. Now see how many other great ideas you can gather from others as well. :o)

See you on the 13th!
